Christmas thoughts
Christmas is supposed to be about Christ. Oh...is that why we all push truck loads of toys at children Christmas morning?? I don't know why this is bugging me so bad but I hate the thought of Sydney being surrounded by tons of gifts on Christmas. Birthdays? Sure. Go all out on Birthdays. But how am I teaching her that Christmas is about Jesus when she's surrounded by tons of toys and gifts? It's never bothered me until now. Probably because it's my first Christmas as a parent. I don't get how kids making Christmas lists and thinking about toys for themselves is celebrating the Christmas spirit. Sure, it celebrates the commercialized Christmas spirit but not the actual true meaning of Christmas. The cool part is that we are our own family and we can create whatever traditions we want. We can do Christmas the way society does it or we can do it the way we feel is best. I'm grateful for that. At the same time though, we live in society. It's discouraging to realize that even when you do things the way you feel best for your family, you're still fighting against so much of society. And it's everywhere.

I completely agree with you. People think I am "crazy" because we don't want our children to believe in Santa or that we only get 3 gifts for them (and maybe some things from the dollar store). It bothers me a lot, I want them to know why we have Christmas. Oh and someone told me the other day, the politically correct thing to put on a christmas card is "happy holidays". I'm sorry? I didn't realize you could not say "Merry Christmas" when afterall, we are celebrating the birth of Christ. AH. Okay, I feel better. lol. I am just glad someone feels like overloading their child with toys and santa is what Christmas is about!
ReplyDeleteThat is incredible!!!!! That sounds like something that Alex would say!!! The fight against society! It's hard because I totally believe and understand.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! I get so frustrated with it. Nicholas and i have been planning how we can make it more about Christ and not presents... especially Santa. I love Santa, but i mean, this magical guy which brings toys from NO WHERE and there are no consequences, money, anything involved. It bugs me. We will see what happens as Hayden gets bigger.
ReplyDeletedoes this mean i cant get sydney anything for Christmas?
ReplyDeleteserious question
AGREED! So in our ward in California there was a lady that told us how a few years back they decided to use all the money they normally spent on Presents for their family for something a little different that year. They were going to give it to a special charity that helps kids in South America go to school. They discussed it with their grandkids and explained why it was the true way to celebrate Christmas. Those same kids that were just told they'd miss out on presents came up with a plan to also donate some of their favorite toys too!
ReplyDeleteThe next year came around with the regular Christmas way of doing things and asking what everyone wanted for Christmas. When asked, ALL of her grandkids replied with the same answer. They wanted to donate stuff again because it "felt happy."
They were able to see the true spirit of Christmas at a young age, and that's what they've been doing ever since.
I just thought I'd share that story with you! Hope you like it! :D
I'm so glad you're raising our granddaughter!
ReplyDeleteAh, the ever present struggle between being in the world but not of the world. We just had a discussion on this... about how we are supposed to be involved in our communities, serving and volunteering, making friends of all faiths, knowing what important things are happening in the world, and casting informed votes for political leaders. Other than that, there are many ways I distance myself from society. TV is basically Satan's way of infiltrating the home. It's appalling what lessons we allow to be "taught" or accepted in our homes. I can tell you process things VERY THOROUGHLY in your mind and I appreciate you sharing those thoughts! Great thoughts on Christmas! You rock :-)
ReplyDeleteI miss you sooo bad! Thanks for the Christmas card! Hope we get to talk soon!!!
